As their school celebrates its 20th anniversary of delivering Gaelic medium education, two young Gaelic singers have marked the occasion with a couple of gold badges in the fluent singing competitions.
Bun-sgoil Chondobhrait (Condorrat Primary School) in North Lanarkshire established a Gaelic medium stream in 1997 and have been marking the anniversary throughout the year. Situated in what was originally the village of Condorrat, but is now part of the new town of Cumbernauld, the school has two streams – with the children in the Gaelic stream following the same curriculum entirely through Gaelic until the end of primary three when they begin studying English.
The school has continued to grow considerably in the last 20 years with around 180 pupils now part of the Gaelic stream.
Chondobhrait pupil Hannah MacLeod won the gold badge in the seven-year-old solo singing for fluent speakers. Although Hannah lives in Lennoxtown, her mum from Skye and her dad from Lewis mean it is hardly surprising she is a fluent Gaelic speaker, despite being a North Lanarkshire local.
Fellow Chondobhrait pupil, Isla Duke, also picked up a gold badge for solo singing but for the girls nine-year-old competition. Now living in Falkirk, Isla hasn’t forgotten her roots and was joined by a some of her Argyllshire grandparents at the Mòd on Tuesday.
