Lochaber Yacht Club’s annual regatta provided a stern test for sailors on Saturday, as the challenging conditions on Loch Linnhe made for some competitive racing.
Wintery winds and relentless rain made the initial morning racing particularly tricky.
Club commodore, Hamish Loudon said: ‘Conditions for the morning races were challenging to say the least. Gusts of 25 knots and above gave the safety boat some work to do standing by the capsized dinghies.’
‘Particular praise should go to the junior crews, some of whom had only learned to sail at the club in June this year.’
The afternoon racing was more enjoyable despite the persistent rain.
The fast handicap dinghy class was won in style by the trapeze artists, Jon Gay and Paul Biggin, in the Mean Machine, followed by Mike Campbell and Liz Merry in a Laser 2000. The Junior racers had a very close battle for the Simpson Trophy with Josh Balcombe and Lyra Swaby just finishing first.
The three person keelboats of the Soling class enjoyed exciting racing in the brisk conditions with Solaris coming out on top being the only boat to hoist a spinnaker, and survive.
After the prize giving, all the sailors and friends enjoyed an excellent BBQ supper when the rain finally stopped.
Anyone wishing to try sailing should come down to the club on a Thursday evening when instructors are available from 6.30pm, or watch the racing on a Monday or Wednesday evening.
