Preparations for the Rotary Club of Oban’s Am-Am golf competition this year is well under way with inquiries and entries from as far afield as Crieff, Dunblane, Campbeltown, Fort William, Stirling and Glasgow.

Members of the Rotary Club are forming a squad to do groundwork at Glencruitten Golf Club in anticipation of the event on June 4.

David Mudie, the new Am-Am committee convener, said: ‘It is the biggest event in Glencruitten Golf Club’s year, and a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club. We should be up to our maximum, about 44 or 43 teams, just short of 180 people.

‘We hope to raise £10,000. We will almost certainly spend all that on local good causes. Our sponsors have been responding with Oban’s renowned generosity contributing to the Rotary Club charity fund.’

The Bank of Scotland has been the principal sponsor for the past 32 years of Oban Rotary’s annual Am-Am, giving £500 this year, plus a very handsome trophy, which is presented to the winners of the competition.

There will also be an auction and prize-giving, thanks to the generosity of players and sponsors. Am-Am committee member Graham MacQueen added: ‘There is a rumour the new convener will be singing at the door with a bucket.’
