Sir, While I share much of Jim Montgomery’s frustration with Argyll and Bute Council, as detailed in his letter of January 29, I must take issue with his assertion that the new footpaths and walkways consultation is a waste of time.
Apart from the fact the council is required to do this under the new ‘right to roam’ legislation, it is a worthwhile initiative. There will eventually be a network of footpaths, clearly signposted and marked on Ordnance Survey maps, all over Scotland. The network will be extensive, encouraging widespread access to even the remotest areas, and will cater for everyone from serious walkers to those who just want a leisurely stroll.
Suggestions for paths to be included have come from among others community councils and members of the public. The first draft plan has been completed and I would urge people to go and see it at the Corran Halls, Oban, on Monday March 9. Even at this late stage, further suggestions can be accepted.
I agree with Jim Montgomery that it is essential we develop our local economy, now more than ever, and I feel the paths network helps to do this and will complement the excellent cycle track.
