AN AUDIENCE of around 500 packed into Lochaber High School main hall on the last school day before the Christmas holidays for the ‘Strictly Got Talent’ finals.
Twenty acts took to the stage for what turned out to be a memorable afternoon for everyone concerned as pupils and staff competed for the honour of being crowned talent champions for 2008. After prolonged deliberations by the judges, Isla MacKay and Katrina Bell, both of S2, lifted the coveted Lochaber High School Strictly Got Talent trophy, which pupils made especially in the school for the occasion.
The talented duo performed their own distinctive version of ‘Fields of Gold’.
Caitlin Kelly, S6, compered the heats, which were held over three lunch breaks and proved to be very popular with large numbers of pupils attending.
The finalists were chosen by a combination of audience votes and marks from a panel of four judges: headteacher Mr Sutherland, depute headteacher Mrs MacKenzie, Erin MacDougall, (S6), and Fiona MacLeod, (S6).
Performances ranged from traditional to rock music, Highland dancing to break dancing, solo singing to group singing plus circus skills and acts, which were impossible to categorise.
There were strong contenders among the staff performances but, with the hall filled to capacity for the grand final on Friday afternoon, it was solo singers who came out on top.
Compere David Childs, S6, announced Isla MacKay and Katrina Bell (both S2) as the winners, who gave a haunting rendition of ‘Fields of Gold’. Runner up was Michelle MacDougall, S6.
