Fraser celebrates clean sweep of shinty titles
Published:  09 October, 2008

FOLLOWING the conclusion of the 2008 shinty season, former Scotland internationalist Fraser Inglis has now won every senior shinty medal the game has to offer.

The Taynuilt man has played at the top level in both the north and south areas.

Before joining Kingussie he was a celebrated player for Oban Camanachd.

After his time with both Oban and Kingussie Fraser now has winner’s medals from shinty’s Premier League, the Camanachd Cup, the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup, the Macaulay Cup and the MacTavish Cup.

His current manager at Kingussie, Jimmy Gow, praised the attitude and skill of the player, saying he is among the very best players in the last couple of decades to wield a caman.

‘If I was to name a team of the best players from the last 20 years he would be in that team,’ said Jimmy Gow.

‘I have played with the likes of Davy Anderson and Ronald Ross at Kingussie and against Oban’s Dougie MacIntyre. Fraser’s right up there with them.’

However, Fraser remains modest about his achievement, instead giving credit to those who helped him get to the top of the game.

The 32-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted players of his generation, said: ‘I have been very fortunate to play for two of the greatest clubs in shinty.

‘My gaining these awards comes as a consequence of my good fortune and the countless hours of unselfish work by dedicated club volunteers who have given me the opportunity to enjoy my shinty through their time and effort.’

Jimmy Gow added: ‘When he came here two years ago I wasn’t sure what to expect as we had many battles on the field against each other – he wasn’t the nicest to play against and neither was I!

‘But I can honestly say he has been tremendous to work with and a great player for us.

‘He travels up here every week and won’t take a penny in expenses.

‘That says a lot about him because he just wants to play shinty.

‘No-one can doubt his ability.

‘He can create things out of nothing and has tremendous vision.

‘He has a half swing that will send the ball the same distance as many players’ full swings and he can play any position.’
