A LARGE quantity of illegal drugs were seized in Mull on Tuesday following dawn raids by police on two Tobermory homes.
A 36-year-old man and 37-year-old woman were cautioned by police, and reports have been sent to the procurator fiscal.
Mull police officers, backed by detectives from Dunoon, raided the houses at 7.30am. The searches lasted a number of hours.
Mull sergeant Angela Macdonald, who co-ordinated the island’s first dawn raids, gave The Oban Times exclusive access to the early morning events.
Later, she said: ‘We were acting on information given to us in confidence by the public.
‘Warrants were issued to search these houses because of that intelligence.
‘Hopefully, our actions have demonstrated to the public that we will not tolerate any illegal drug use and we will take the strictest measures against anyone breaking the law.
‘Drug misuse is not a big problem in Tobermory, but by taking swift action at an early stage we will not only protect the public but ensure that this problem does not escalate.’
Constable Finlay Christine, a long term member of the Mull police force, said: ‘This is certainly the biggest haul of suspected Class A, B and C drugs to be found in a search carried out on the island.’
Mull councillor Mary-Jean Devon said the raids made it clear that the Mull residents will not turn a blind eye to illegal drug use.
She said: ‘We will speak to the police. We are against drugs and do not want them here. The fact that police listen to information given to them and take prompt action shows that we are still among one of the safest places in country to live.’
