Continue reading More gales hit the West Highlands Connel and Connel Bridge near Oban were battered by gale-force winds on December 8 2011 and the day that followed saw stranded boats on Connel foreshore and complete calm,as well as debris on Oban’s Esplanade and shore. Oban was battered by winds gusting up to between 80-90 mph this afternoon,December 8 2011,with the town centre virtually closed down as people were sent home from work at lunchtime and schools closed across Argyll. Continue reading Oban battered by 80-90mph winds The first Oban Winter Festival was held in the town on the last week of November,with a number of activities and events to suit all ages,including a parade with Santa and his reindeer,Christmas lights switch-on,a torchlight and lantern parade through town,children’s Christmas market.,with massed children’s choir and ‘Obang’fireworks by Pyro1 over Oban Bay. Pyro1 came up trumps on November 27 2011 to make up for the technical hitch which saw £6,000-worth of fireworks go up in 50 secs earlier the same month at Oban’s community fireworks display to mark Guy Fawkes night. The resulting publicity saw The Oban Times video of the failed display go viral on the Internet via YouTube. This video shows the five minute display ‘Obang’,named after the failed fireworks display in Oban,which was created thanks to the positive reaction to the short but spectacular failure. Despite squalls blowing over Oban Bay,the ‘Obang’display drew hundreds of people to watch the event,marking the end of the 10-day long,first ever Oban Winter Festival. Oban and Lorn turned out in force on Saturday evening,November 19 2011,to see Santa and his reindeer parade through the town from the Corran Halls,down George Street to Station Square,led by Oban Pipe Band.
