Emergency services race to Loch Awe as kayakers get into difficulty

hm_coastguard-logoTwo men in kayaks got into difficulties on Loch Awe just before lunchtime on Friday,September 28 2012,after their boats became swamped with water.

Five men, from a party of 10 from the north east of England staying in the Loch Awe area for the weekend, decided to kayak across to Innishail Island and while three made it,two got into difficulties and the emergency services were called.

Oban Coastguard Station Officer Iain MacKinnon said conditions had been difficult and about the time of the incident there had been about a Force 5-6 wind blowing.

The two men managed to make it ashore before emergencies arrived but both admitted to the authorities that if they had not been wearing lifejackets there could have been a different outcome.
