The community artwork unveiled as Merida, from Brave

Oban has a cinema once again. Oban Phoenix Cinema has risen from the ashes, two years from when the Highland Theatre closed its doors, thanks to  lot of hard work from local volunteers and grants from a number of generous organisations.

The opening night saw musical contributions from Sarah Hill and Oban High School Pipe Band and tributes to the former chairman the late Donald MacDonald from Councillor Lousie Glen-Lee and Argyll and Bute MSP Mike Russell before the new seats were christened by the capacity audience as they watched Disney Pixar’s Brave.

A specially commissioned piece of mysterious artwork, which members of the community had painted strips of without knowing what the full painting depicted, was revealed as Merida, the main character from Brave.

A round of applause at the end showed the audience’s appreciation, not only for the film, but for the town’s fabulous, comfortable, newly refurbished cinema.
