Freight train derailed by landslide blocks West Highland line

The West Highland rail line has been blocked between Corrour and Tulloch, south of Fort William after a 24-wagon freight train was derailed following a landslide at Tulloch.

The landslide happened just after 7pm on Thursday June 28 2012 and led to the cancellation of ScotRail’s Caledonian sleeper service from Fort William to London Euston.

The driver of the freight train was not hurt but was badly shaken by the derailment.

Network Rail said the remote location would make it difficult to recover the derailed train and it is not known when services will resume. The line is expected to remain closed on Friday morning.

Heavy rainfall also led to severe flooding in many parts, including in Fort Augustus and the A82 was closed between Tarbet and Ardlui because of debris on the road.
