THE BIGGEST annual celebration of Celtic song,literature,music and art begins on Thursday January 19 2012 as Scotland’s Celtic Connections festival got underway.
A festival that focuses the spotlight on Celtic culture and music,the event will see more than 2,100 musicians from around the world take to the stage at 20 venues across Glasgow.
Featuring singers,fiddlers,pipers and artists from across Argyll,the region will be well represented at the 18-day festival featuring 300 concerts,ceilidhs,art exhibitions,and workshops.
Scottish bagpipe legend,Fred Morrison,who recently spent time training Mid Argyll pipers,will take to the stage next Tuesday,when he will join the Irish quartet of Dónal Lunny,Liam O’Flynn,Andy Irvine and Paddy Glackin. Fred will perform material from his 2010 album Outlands,which combines his family’s South Uist piping style and that of US bluegrass.
Argyll Piper Angus MacColl has also been asked to play at the Gordon Duncan Recital.
Designed as a homage to the famous piper,Angus,from Benderloch,has been invited to play music from the Scottish,Irish and Breton piping traditions,which Gordon enjoyed and excelled in playing. The Glenfiddich Piping Champion of 2010,Angus will compete against pipers Alexis Meunier and Northern Ireland’s Robert Watt for the Gordon Duncan Recital title.
